I'm on a regeneration mission. After a vision with one clear message - Heal the Land, Heal the Soil - I started right in my own backyard. Come along for the journey.

Growing up, I remember Granddad's huge cabbages, and Mum carrying buckets of manure around her garden. She gardened alone, I was the quiet observer.

I'd watch her sprinkle derris dust around the veges, and remember the row of containers and bottles in the garden shed. It never sat right with me. I've always had a soft spot for nature - all walks of life, and Mother Earth especially. She feels like home, and her creatures fill me with the utmost fascination.

Then one day I noticed little white flies on the underside of our lemon tree leaves. The common advice was to spray water, dishwash liquid, diatomaceous earth. Something told me to research first, and none of it felt right. My curiosity kept asking: there must be another way? My intuition confirmed it when I stumbled on companion planting - a few alyssum under the lemon tree, and the whitefly problem corrected itself. That was the start of working with nature, instead of following the usual garden advice.

I had a deep desire not to kill anything directly in my garden to work with nature, use zero chemicals, and still grow a thriving garden. Was that even possible?

I'd dig, add compost, mulch, fertilise, clear the plants, and keep everything in tidy little rows. Some things grew. A lot of it struggled. I was diagnosing problems and fixing them one by one - a useful lesson in observation, but I had it backwards. Great plant growth starts with the soil, and I didn't yet know that my digging, clearing, and tidy rows were quietly destroying the soil food web underneath.

Great food comes from great soil, and from working with the ecosystem, not against it. Nature already knows what to do, we just get to work alongside her.

Little did I know, the way I'd been intuitively gardening had a name: Regenerative gardening.
